The film begins with the birth of Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick), the son of Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and Queen Sarabi (Madge Sinclair). Mufasa is a wise and noble king who teaches Simba about the Circle of Life, a philosophy that connects all creatures in a delicate balance. Simba’s life takes a dramatic turn when his uncle, Scar (Jeremy Irons), jealous of Simba’s position as heir to the throne, orchestrates a tragedy that leads to Mufasa’s death. Scar manipulates Simba into believing that he is responsible for his father’s death, causing Simba to flee the Pride Lands in guilt and shame.

Simba’s exile marks the start of his journey of self-discovery. He meets two comical characters, Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), who adopt him and teach him their carefree philosophy of “Hakuna Matata,” meaning “no worries.” Simba grows into an adult lion in the jungle, but the memory of his father and the Pride Lands continues to haunt him. When his childhood friend, Nala (Moira Kelly), finds him and urges him to return, Simba must confront his past and take responsibility for his destiny.
