The film begins with Neo, an ordinary man who feels that something is wrong with the world, experiencing strange occurrences and being contacted by a group led by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). Morpheus reveals to Neo that the world he perceives is not real; it is an artificial simulation created by intelligent machines to subjugate humanity. The real world, as it exists, is a desolate wasteland, and humans are kept in pods, their minds plugged into The Matrix while their bodies are harvested for energy.
Morpheus believes that Neo is “The One,” a prophesied figure who has the power to free humanity from The Matrix. As Neo undergoes rigorous training and gains extraordinary abilities within the simulation, he learns to manipulate the rules of The Matrix itself—things like gravity, physics, and time are all bendable. With the help of Morpheus, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and the rest of their crew, Neo begins his journey to confront the machines and bring an end to their control.
